Historic Scotland

The Trust has been awarded a grant from Historic Scotland to develop a publication about WWII installations in Caithness. This will be supplemented by information about Brough Bay.

Heritage Path at Brough

A heritage path is being developed at Brough - signage will be put in place shortly. The old peat cutting road at Brough was used in days of yore to access the peats on Brough Common and local people used to take their white horse and peat waggon along the track to what is now known as Brough Grazings to cut the peats. The path was also used by people from the Poor House and by soldiers in WWII to walk to Brough from Dunnet Hill to the local village shop and post office, which was at Windhaven. There are opportunities to study the peat and get a feel for what it was like to live in the area and the hardships they must have endured, and to study the wealth of biodiversity along the path. Local ladies used to walk from the crofts near Courtfall Loch and from Dunnet to buy their sugar, sweets and other essentials. Windhaven is now a history archive run by the Dunnet Head Educational Trust.
