We had a great time with the orienteering during the Caithness Challenge weekend on 23-25 July and we even got a "Thank you" from Seb Coe! It was the same weekend we opened the Heritage Path at Brough!

The RSPB took over management of Easter Head, which is part of Dunnet Head, in 2008 and one of the species it was interested in was the great yellow bumblebee. The Trust's display at the Orkney Science Festival will focus on species identification, in particular bees. Thanks to a supporter, we have an excellent collection of photos in the history archive at Brough which is fast becoming more than a history archive - see our site at http://www.dunnethead.co.uk. The Trust has been awarded a grant from Historic Scotland to develop a publication about WWII installations in Caithness. This will be supplemented by information about Brough Bay.

Heritage Path at Brough

A heritage path is being developed at Brough - signage will be put in place shortly. The old peat cutting road at Brough was used in days of yore to access the peats on Brough Common and local people used to take their white horse and peat waggon along the track to what is now known as Brough Grazings to cut the peats. The path was also used by people from the Poor House and by soldiers in WWII to walk to Brough from Dunnet Hill to the local village shop and post office, which was at Windhaven. There are opportunities to study the peat and get a feel for what it was like to live in the area and the hardships they must have endured, and to study the wealth of biodiversity along the path. Local ladies used to walk from the crofts near Courtfall Loch and from Dunnet to buy their sugar, sweets and other essentials. Windhaven is now a history archive run by the Dunnet Head Educational Trust.

Dunnet Head Educational Trust joins Wild Scotland

The Trustees of the Dunnet Head Educational Trust are delighted to have recently become a member of "Wild Scotland", a proactive and forward thinking organisation. The Trust is finalising the arrangements for the Caithness & Sutherland Walking Festival (1-8 May) and working with the Caithness Chamber of Commerce to look at ways of developing the walking product in the far north of Scotland. This includes the Scottish Coastal Way, being accredited to the "Walkers are Welcome" scheme and working with a London University to create an integrated database driven scheme for booking walks. Dunnet Head is a great place to view wildlife - puffins, fulmar and razorbills are just some of the birds which nest on the Head, and there are regular visits from cetaceans and even a resident seal colony in Brough Bay. The Trust has created a DVD which depicts the many aspects of the Head, dubbed "Caithness in Miniature" by Wild Scotland. As the perimeter of Dunnet Head is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, it seems appropriate that the Trust is a partner in the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity and is involved with many activities throughout the year.
